What is documentary family photography all about?
Its an approach really, a way of looking at family photography that outside the norm. It came from my own experience of trying to wrestle my kids into photo-perfect portraits that cause way more frustration than they were worth. This documentary approach still has some guidance, I still do some light posing or general instruction but then I let the moment happen and keep shooting… through the tears, the laughter and all. I also LOVE home sessions where we get to photograph moments that are typical for your family; reading, crafting, playing games, bed routine etc. Its all about the the playfulness, the meltdowns and the tender moments shared amid the chaos of family life.
How long does a session typically last?
I have two types of sessions, The Documentary Family Sessions are 2-3hrs and often takes place at home or on vacation. We get lots of activities in including a walk or playing in the yard along with cuddles, reading, playing etc. This gets you lots of great candids, artistic portraits and real emotion. We also do some gently posed family photos.
The shorter, Simply Portraits Session is 45min and is limited to one location outside of the home. This session often takes place at a park or beach and includes gentle posing with the opportunity for a handful of candids, depending on group size.
Why shoot in our house instead of the park?
Everyone is relaxed and at ease and the kids jump into their routines, playing with toys or reading books and forget I’m even there. If you’re looking for a session that best captures your family as you are, I suggest sticking with home! This doesn’t mean we have to stay indoors the whole time, lets follow your routine and I’ll tag along. Take the dog to the park, play in the yard, chalk up the driveway, collect stones at the river. I’m all for it. If you prefer a strictly outdoor session though, I’m totally into it so please don’t feel pressured. Kids quickly play in the wilds of nature and those moments are photo-gold as well.
Do you use a second photographer?
Only for weddings. I don’t bring a second along with me for family sessions as its more difficult for clients to adjust to two photographers in their space than one.
Are Digital Files always included?
For the Documentary Family Session, the session fee includes my time and talent only. This way, families can see all the images before investing in the digital products. Digital collections are available as are files a la carte. Clients often end up spending $600 – $1300 including the session fee, digital files and prints.
For the Simply Portraits Session, you get 10 high resolution files included in the price with additional files sold separately. Typically, clients spend anywhere from $425-$900 including the session fee, digital files and prints.
What do I need to do to book you?
Simple. I need two things; a signed agreement and a deposit of $250. Then we’re good to go!
