Sticks and Stones Wilderness School is Ontario’s home for wilderness skills training and stewardship education. They have been operating since 2008, offering an array of courses and workshops from basket weaving to animal tracking and foraging. Its an incredible place run by incredibly dedicated people. For the last few years, they have been based at Kimbercote Farm, just south of Heathcote, Ontario.
Skeet and Kate run Sticks and Stones with the help of some dedicated staff and volunteers. Kate runs an annual Women’s Wilderness Skills workshop over a weekend in July and this year I was lucky enough to photograph an afternoon. They build water filtration systems, cooked with fire and learned how to forage for food. While I was there, I got a refresher on identifying poison ivy, which is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while! They are so lovely here, I’m excited to return. Basket weaving I think… I see myself making one for each individual task that would possibly require a basket, and hang them all lovingly in my kitchen.
Check them out if you’re interested in acquiring some new skills!
